Nutrition, Scalp Health and GLP-1’s

Why nutrition, scalp health, and the slow beauty movement matter more than ever in 2026

Something is shifting in the way we think about hair. Not in the way trends usually shift; a new colour season, a viral cut, a miracle product, but something deeper. What does it actually mean to have healthy hair, and what does it take to get there?

At Kent Brushes, we've been making hairbrushes for nearly 250 years, and we’re happy to see consumers stepping back from the noise, asking harder questions, and returning to the fundamentals of haircare. We want to look at what is driving that shift, to take a look at one of the most talked-about topics in health today, GLP1s, and why we believe the slow beauty philosophy has never been more relevant.

The Hair Industry in 2026: A Moment of Real Change
The global haircare market has experienced consistent annual growth year on year, but the growth isn't coming from the usual suspects. Consumers are moving away from "how do I look?" to "how do I grow?" prioritising scalp health, hair longevity, and meaningful routines over quick fixes and product stacking. Industry experts describe this as a move toward preventative, long-term scalp and hair health rather than surface-level fixes. The one-size-fits-all approach is firmly on its way out, and we couldn’t agree more.

In 2026, we believe how you treat your scalp is as important as the way you treat your skin; with consistency, care, and an understanding that what happens beneath the surface drives everything above it. After years of overcomplication, over-promising, and over-processing, it is time to remember something that has always been true: great hair is an inside-out story. Your health and nutrition, combined with beautifully made hairbrushes and products, are going to be your answer to healthy, happy hair.

GLP-1 Medications and Hair Loss: What You Need to Know
One of the most urgent and underreported conversations in hair health right now centres on GLP-1 medications. Drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro, taken by millions of people globally for weight loss and type 2 diabetes management. Their connection to hair loss is now well-documented, and a 2025 meta-analysis examining more than 84,000 participants across 34 studies found that people taking GLP-1 drugs were 3.4 times more likely to experience hair loss compared to those not on the medications. Beauty Independent also reported on the growing wave of beauty brands addressing GLP-1-related hair loss as one of the defining emerging concerns in the haircare category.

The mechanism isn't mysterious. The hair loss most commonly associated with GLP-1 use is a condition called telogen effluvium, a temporary, diffuse shedding triggered when the body interprets rapid weight loss as physiological stress. GLP-1-associated hair loss is unique in that the continued weight loss is a continued stressor, which makes the body's ability to reset the hair shedding cycle slower than with a single event.

Crucially, the drug itself is rarely the direct culprit. The real driver in most cases is nutritional depletion. GLP-1 medications work partly by dramatically suppressing appetite, which means many people on these drugs are consuming far fewer calories and far fewer nutrients than their bodies need to sustain healthy hair growth.

Research identifies the key deficiencies behind GLP-1-related hair loss as iron, zinc, vitamin D, biotin, and, most significantly, protein. Hair is made almost entirely of keratin, a structural protein, and without adequate protein intake, the body simply cannot maintain normal hair production. Hair is one of the first casualties of that nutritional shortfall.

The shedding typically appears two to three months after the nutritional stress begins, meaning many people don't immediately connect their hair loss to their diet. The reassuring news is that telogen effluvium is reversible, but recovery can take anywhere from six to eighteen months once nutrition is stabilised, which is why getting ahead of the problem matters enormously.

Nutrition and hair health

Nutrition Is Not Optional. It's the Foundation
Whether you're taking a GLP-1 medication or not, this moment is a powerful reminder that no topical product, however sophisticated, can compensate for what's missing from your plate. But this isn't only a conversation for people on medication. Restrictive diets, chronic stress, crash dieting, and inconsistent nutrition all have a measurable impact on hair vitality. Hair is one of the first places the body signals that something is out of balance.

Hair health depends on a steady supply of:

  • PROTEIN: the building block of every strand. Aim for adequate daily intake from eggs, fish, lean meat, legumes, and dairy. If you're on a GLP-1, research advises prioritising protein above other macros at every meal.
  • IRON: essential for carrying oxygen to the hair follicle. Low iron is one of the most common and overlooked causes of diffuse hair shedding, particularly in women. If possible, explore getting your iron levels tested.
  • ZINC: supports tissue repair and keeps oil glands around follicles functioning well.
Vitamin D: plays a role in creating new hair follicles. Many people in the UK are deficient, particularly through winter.
  • BIOTIN (B7): supports keratin infrastructure. Found in eggs, nuts, and seeds.
  • B12 AND FOLATE: involved in red blood cell production, which feeds the scalp.

For anyone on a GLP-1 medication, nutritional monitoring isn't just advisable, it's arguably essential. Speaking with a GP, dietitian, or nutritionist about maintaining adequate protein and micronutrient levels during weight loss is a step that can make a real difference to how your hair responds. This blog is designed to act only as a guide, so please do speak to your health professional before embarking on any changes to your diet or lifestyle.

Scalp Health: The Foundation of Everything
The other side of the equation is what you do externally, specifically, how you care for your scalp. The scalp is the soil from which your hair grows. A healthy, stimulated scalp environment is the single most important external factor in hair health, and yet most people's routines skip it entirely, jumping straight from shampoo to styling. In 2026, the industry has finally caught up with what trichologists have always known: scalp care and hair care are not the same thing, and the former must come first.

A healthy scalp has good circulation (so nutrients reach the follicle), balanced sebum production (the scalp's own natural conditioning system), and a clean, unblocked environment (so new growth isn't impeded). The right tools support all three, and they don't need to be complicated.

The Kent Brushes Routine

The Kent Brushes Routine: Simple, Purposeful, Effective
This is where the slow beauty approach becomes practical. You don't need a dozen products or a complex ten-step routine. What you need are a small number of the right tools, used consistently and with intention.

Here's the routine we recommend, adaptable to every hair type and concern, including those experiencing thinning or GLP-1-related shedding.

STEP 1
Wash Days: The Shampoo Brush
Before or during your shampoo, work a Kent Shampoo Massage Brush across your scalp using small, gentle circular motions. This does two things at once: it ensures your shampoo reaches the scalp properly rather than just coating the lengths, and it stimulates blood circulation to the follicles, encouraging the delivery of the nutrients your hair needs to grow.

This step takes under two minutes and makes a noticeable difference to how clean and refreshed the scalp feels. It's the simplest possible version of the "head spa" concept that has swept the professional salon world, done at home, without fuss.

TIP: Use lukewarm water rather than hot. Heat can strip the scalp of its natural oils, which are essential for hair health, particularly when hair is already in a fragile state.

STEP 2
Daily Brushing: Your Boar Bristle Brush
Daily brushing with a quality boar bristle brush is one of the most powerful, and most underrated things you can do for your hair and scalp. Here's why:
Natural boar bristle has a composition similar to human hair. When it moves through the hair, it picks up the sebum your scalp produces naturally and distributes it from root to tip, conditioning each strand without a single drop of product. The result is shinier, smoother, softer hair that holds moisture better and is less prone to breakage.

For anyone with thinning hair or experiencing increased shedding, including those on GLP-1 medications, this distribution of natural oils is particularly valuable, helping to protect fragile strands and reduce mechanical breakage.

Kent Brushes are famous for our bristle hairbrushes, from our Classic Shine range which is available in soft pure bristle (ideal for fine or thinning hair) and mixed bristle-and-nylon (ideal for medium to thick hair) to bristle brushes for men, babies and more. You can explore the full range here.

HOW TO BRUSH: Start from the ends and work your way up to avoid pulling at tangles. Once detangled, take long, sweeping strokes from root to tip to distribute oils and stimulate the scalp. Even a consistent 2–3 minutes morning and evening makes a significant difference over time.

STEP 3
For Thinning or Fragile Hair: Go Softer
If you're navigating active hair thinning or shedding, the most important thing you can do with your brush routine is go gentler, not harder. Our hairbrushes for thinning and receding hair are filled with the softest natural bristles, designed to massage the scalp and distribute oils without creating any additional stress on fragile strands.

The Ladies Finest Satinwood Pure Soft White Bristle Narrow Brush is a customer favourite in this category, gentle enough for the most sensitive scalps, but highly effective at stimulating circulation and adding a natural shine to fine hair. Our bristles encourage the scalp's essential oils to flow through the hair strands, nourishing and protecting each one while leaving it smooth and naturally shiny.

For men dealing with thinning or receding hair, our Men's Finest soft bristle range offers the same quality in shapes designed for shorter styles, including military-style brushes that are comfortable in the hand and easy to use.

Hair Routine - Step 3

STEP 4
Detangling Wet Hair: The Handmade Comb
Never brush wet hair with a bristle brush, this is when the hair shaft is at its most vulnerable and most prone to breakage. Instead, reach for a Kent Handmade Comb to gently work through tangles from ends to roots.

Our handmade acetate combs are hand-sawn and hand-finished, which means every tooth has smooth, rounded edges, no sharp seams or moulding lines that can catch and tear the hair. This matters more than most people realise. A poorly made comb with rough tooth edges creates micro-damage to the cuticle with every use, accumulating over time into dull, brittle hair.

Used correctly, a quality comb on damp hair causes minimal breakage and sets the hair up beautifully for drying, whether you're air-drying (the slow beauty ideal) or blow-drying.

TIP: For thinning hair apply a small amount of leave-in conditioner or lightweight hair oil to damp hair before combing. This adds slip and reduces the mechanical friction that can cause breakage.

STEP 5
Keep Your Tools Clean
A clean brush is a functional brush. Product residue, sebum, and dust accumulate in bristles over time, and a dirty brush redeposits all of that back onto your clean scalp, counterproductive when you're working on building a healthier scalp environment.

Our Hairbrush and Comb Cleaner is specifically formulated to clean natural bristle without damaging it. A weekly clean keeps your tools performing as they should and extends their life considerably.

Your Complete Weekly Routine at a Glance
Every wash day (2–3 times per week)

  • Use the Kent Shampoo Massage Brush during washing to stimulate the scalp and ensure a thorough clean.
  • Detangle damp hair gently with your Kent Handmade Comb, working ends to roots
  • Air-dry where possible; if blow-drying, use a low heat setting and a heat protection spray.

Every day (morning and/or evening)

  • 2–3 minutes brushing with your Kent Classic Shine or Finest Bristle Brush - long strokes, root to tip (for our curly hair crew - this may affect the integrity of your curl, so perhaps limit how often you brush)
  • This distributes natural oils, stimulates circulation, and conditions hair without any product

Weekly

  • Clean brushes and combs with the Kent Hairbrush and Comb Cleaner

Ongoing - nutrition and lifestyle

  • Prioritise protein at every meal, particularly if on GLP-1 medication
  • Check your micronutrient intake: iron, zinc, vitamin D, biotin, B12
  • Minimise heat styling and harsh chemical treatments, let your natural oils and boar bristle brush do the conditioning work
  • Rest well, stay hydrated, and manage stress where you can, your hair notices all of it!

The Slow Beauty Movement: Our Philosophy
At Kent Brushes, the slow beauty movement isn't a trend we've adopted, it's simply who we are, and who we've always been. Slow beauty isn't a rejection of progress. It's a rejection of complication for complication's sake. It's the belief that lasting results come from consistent, considered habits not from chasing every new launch, loading up on products, or inflicting stress on your hair in pursuit of an immediate transformation.

Invest in great tools, not endless products. A beautifully made brush that you use every day, with a little intention, will do more for your hair over time than a shelf of serums applied inconsistently. Our brushes are built to last.

Look after your health and your nutrition. Your hair reflects your wellbeing. Eat protein. Stay hydrated. Address deficiencies. Sleep. These aren't beauty tips, they're fundamentals that show up visibly, over time.

Prioritise your scalp. Before you think about your style, think about the skin your hair grows from. A clean, stimulated, well-nourished scalp is the foundation of everything.

Take a slower approach. Hair changes happen over cycles of months, not days. The most powerful thing you can do is commit to a simple, consistent routine and give it time. Patience is, genuinely, one of the best hair treatments there is.

This philosophy matters even more now. For anyone navigating GLP-1-related shedding, hormonal hair changes, postpartum loss, or simply the cumulative effects of a busy modern life. The answer isn't to throw more products at the problem. It's to go back to basics: nourish from within, care for the scalp, use tools that are built to last, and trust the process.
